The Flower Forum – Week Three – The Hosta Fairy Came!

The Hosta Fairy Returns

Daffodils, Tulips, and Hollyhocks - Oh, My!

Every April for the past several years, we discover a box of hosta on our porch. They show up mysteriously. No one rings the doorbell and the dog doesn’t bark, but a box or two of hosta freshly dug up will appear. I know who the fairy is, but I never see her to thank her. The Fairy (Jane in her regular existence) works with my husband and has been trying to thin her hosta for years. She gets frustrated because the hosta just grow back more vigorously, but I’m not complaining. I’ve gotten hundreds of dollars of hosta for free and a fun surprise when the fairy makes her delivery.

Despite some decidedly up and down weather (85 to 35 in about 12 hours), the daffodils bloomed so prolifically that Wordsworth would be proud. They are indeed a “host of golden daffodils”. My early tulips popped open mixing some red with the daffodils, and, to my surprise, the hollyhocks I planted from seed last year are already up several inches. Can’t wait to see them in full bloom.
